It all started when Alison Longhurst, founder of Innae and mum of four young girls, decided to get back into the field of work as a personal trainer and martial arts instructor. She wanted to inspire her clients with the thoughts that were in her head and got some vest tops printed with:
‘SWEAT FUELS LIFE’, ‘SADIST DOESN’T COME CLOSE’ and ‘SUCK IT UP!’.
In 2013, with her husband Simon and fellow martial arts enthusiast James Turner, she founded Oaks Martial Arts, and whilst Alison still had that fire in her belly to kick ass with her motivational quotes, she realised that she might need to find a subtler way of doing it, and thus Innae was born!
Alison wanted to create a brand that is empowering and drew inspiration from her years of teaching the Korean martial art of Taekwon-Do.
Innae means perseverance in Korean. It is one of the tenets of Taekwon-do and one that embodies what we believe:
great things happen when you refuse to lose.
Innae is the first sustainable martial arts inspired sportswear brand. It was Alison's stepdaughter who encouraged her to make Innae as sustainable and ethical as possible and so from the outset their mission has been to make sportswear that is empowering in every way. One thing that Alison tells her competitors before they step into the ring is: 'feel the fear and do it anyway' and that's what she told herself when launching Innae.
Developing her own clothing brand is pushing her out of her comfort zone, but that's exactly part of what Innae is all about.
